Local artist Karen Kristin donated her largest canvas painting to date to the City of Cortez, Colorado.
Originally painted in 1992, “The Red Sunset” was originally commissioned for a commercial backdrop in Albuquerque. The 7-by-11-foot piece now hangs in the municipal courtroom in Cortez, according to The Journal.
Internationally renowned artist Kristin, also known as “The Sky Lady,” revealed that the decision to donate the painting arrived when her business Sky Art started to slow down. She owned the studio and gallery for decades. “I sold the studio in September, and it was really a business decision,” she said.

With Sky Art, Kristin painted dramatic skyscapes for various shops and casinos in Vegas and different cities around the world, including at the Venetian Macao Resort and Hotel, Sunset Station Hotel and Casino and the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace.
Kristin’s hundreds of paintings are in her home and studio and she plans to continue donating them to family and friends in the future. “I’m just getting started donating…I will never retire. It’s not my way,” the artist said. “But we are needing, we are old now, and we are needing to simplify while we can.”
Kristin’s paintings have various themes such as wolves, coyotes and mountain lion motifs to early California seascapes and portraits. She’s known for her sky backdrops in Disney Studios, McDonald’s, Elizabeth Taylor, and Toyota.
